It is part of the Chesed philosophy to act on behalf of those that can't help themselves.
Through the help of our supporters and volunteers we have been able to increase our services. Wildlife and other domestic "critters" are included in our circle of care. Orthopaedic cases requiring extensive surgery and rehab have a second chance when we take over, usually after a pet is brought or surrendered to animal services after being hit by a car.
"The question is not, 'Can they reason?' nor, 'Can they talk?' but,' Can they suffer?' " -- Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) English philosopher
Working with rescue often shows us the dark side of humanity, the ignorant side, and the apathetic side. We try to create awareness of humane treatment of all creatures.

A 2011 Highlight from Bobbi Miller, Chesed's founder:
"When I got the call about rescuing Sam, I felt there was nothing Chesed could do for him. There were so many calls for pets needing homes, and no available foster home for this one. I could only offer him a cage to board at a vet's office indefinitely. Not a good option for an older, blind dog. Sadly, when Naomi passed away last year, Chesed lost that haven for the old and special needs dogs. Sam would have been a definite 'yes' for Naomi. I thought carefully, and couldn't think of a soul that was set up for Sam's needs.
However, there was something in the voice of the woman calling on his behalf. Sam, through no fault of his own, had been left at a Vet Hospital in Boca Raton to be euthanized by owners that no longer wanted him. He was 7+ years old, blind, and had no takers. All the no-kill shelters the vet staff called were full. Sam's owners agreed to give the staff the day to find him a home, or they wanted him put to sleep. The vet staff finally called us, only wanting to save this sweet boy. I thought, "well it wouldn't hurt to go meet him, get pictures, and network him to more provisioned rescues". I decided to dedicate the rest of the day to finding a place for Sam to go. Gayle Tolchin, a friend of mine and Chesed Rescue, agreed to come with me to meet him. She must have heard something in my voice. Needless to say, you know where this was going before Gayle or I did. The lovely staff let Sam leave with us, and Sam became an honorary "Tolchin" while I posted him for adoption. Though Gayle had never fostered a dog before, and had her hands full with her own pets, she couldn't leave Sam behind any more than I could.
Fast forward six weeks later: Sam finally had a caller! He had been with us for many weeks and not one single application. Most adopters want young, sighted dogs. But, this wonderful, compassionate family called looking for a new member and they chose Sam. They wanted a special needs dog, knowing there aren't many homes for them. They wanted their children to grow up knowing perfect isn't always perfect, and set an example of Chesed. Once in a while, a special adopter comes along that reminds even seasoned rescue folks, there's good people still."
The Mandells and Sam
"Our family adopted Sam from Chesed 6 months ago, and he has been the love of our lives ever since!
Sam was considered a special needs dog on account of his blindness due to macular degeneration, but with one visit from a trainer, some TLC, and a few pieces of cheese, Sam learned to navigate his way around our home very quickly. He is gentle and affectionate with our three daughters (including our toddler). His favorite activities include our long daily walks and many an hour cuddling up on the couch together.
"Sam’s docile nature and unconditional love are a true joy to us all. Everyone says Sam is lucky that we adopted him, but we honestly believe that we are the lucky ones for getting what feels like to us must be the best dog in the world!" - Marissa Mandell
